Pennies

The U.S. Treasury discontinued production of pennies in November 2025. Pennies remain legal tender, but as supplies are projected to be depleted by early 2026, banks and businesses will have fewer pennies for cash transactions. When exact pennies are not available, totals may be rounded.

Yes. Pennies remain legal tender and can be deposited or used for purchases until they naturally phase out.
The cost to produce a penny exceeds its face value (about 3.7 cents per coin), resulting in significant losses for the U.S. Mint.
Cash transactions may be rounded to the nearest nickel or dime (see examples below). Electronic payments remain unaffected.  We will continue to provide pennies while supplies last.

1. $0.01, $0.02, $0.03, or $0.04 -- rounds up to $0.05

2. $0.06, $0.07, $0.08, or $0.09 -- rounds up to $0.10

3. $0.00, $0.05 -- no rounding

Example: If you cash a check for $100.01, it will be rounded up to $100.05.

Example: If you cash a check for $100.67, it will be rounded up to $100.70.

Yes, Academy Bank will continue to accept pennies in deposits.
Update Point-of-Sale (POS) systems for rounding, train staff, and communicate changes to customers. Encourage electronic payments for exact pricing.
